“Come on, let’s do it!” challenged Jessica Lusamba to other motivated walkers as she considered the steep hill to an overlook of Wheeling Park’s Good Lake. It was an exhilarating end to a group walk designated to encourage physical activity among God’s people and their communities.
Members and friends of the Wheeling, WV, congregation joined churches all over the North American Division in celebrating Let’s Move Day on Sunday, September 20th. Walkers enjoyed fresh air and fellowship with a sun-filled stroll on lush grounds of the 90-year-old park in the midst of their district. To complete the day, participants returned to the church for a cooking demonstration of vegetarian bacon, lettuce, & tomato sandwiches by health ministry leader, Annabel Murphy.
“I believe we honor God by promoting healthy eating and physical activity in everyday life,” explained Murphy. “Families in our area need to know that many health problems can be avoided with simple adjustments in diet and exercise.”
In collaboration with the Adventists InStep for Life initiative to fight the epidemic of obesity in America, the Wheeling church looks forward to making a positive health impact in the area.
“We want to partner with hospitals and community organizations to offer wellness classes, cooking demonstrations, and healthy lifestyle workshops,” added Murphy. “We can start small and build every year to meet the needs of surrounding neighborhoods and challenge families to be fit, physically and spiritually.”
This year’s NAD Let’s Move Day is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016.
